ALL HANDS ON DIRT is an invitation for kids to engage with learning, exploration, and risky play in nature through the lens of trail stewardship and trail building.
With tool affordances (scale, aesthetic, human factors) designed specifically to include children in all aspects of assembley, and trail building we can prompt exploration and education of local forests and promote a relationship of reciprosity between trail users and builders.
ALL HANDS ON DIRT has also been a material exploration into alternative manufacturing methods. Using bent sheet metal fabrication has allowed for rapid prototyping due to widespread accessibility of simple tooling methods. It also results in lighter weight designs for tools like the pulaski (axe) when compared to traditional forged methods of manufacturing.
